Thai
Wedding Ceremony
The Thai wedding ceremony is based in the Buddhist Faith and
is a romantic and spiritually moving celebration of a couple's marriage.
Thai Weddings Start Early!
A very important aspect of the Buddhist Faith is the responsibility
for all Buddhists to take care of and provide for the monks in their community.
On the morning of a Thai wedding, the Thai bride and groom must make a
spiritual offering to the monks. Traditionally, this offering of food
and incense must be delivered to the monks by 5 am. If the couple is lucky
enough to be blessed by an elder monk while delivering their offering,
they are destined to enjoy a highly enlightened marriage.
Three Distinct Ceremonies
Thai brides and grooms can arrive either together or separately to celebrate their Thai wedding.
• The first ceremony is called the Buddhist Praying Ceremony whereby the couple is seated on the floor while the monks chant, inviting all the angels to attend this sacred ritual.
• The second ceremony is the Bonding Ceremony. This is when the Thai bride and groom "tie the knot". The sacred thread, the Saai Sin, is tied around the wrists of the couple to link them symbolically. The thread is later removed, at which point the bride and groom exchange wedding rings.
• The third and final ceremony is the Water Pouring Ceremony. The bride and groom are seated on the wedding altar with their arms outstretched, palms facing upwards ready to receive the Holy Water that their guests will pour over their hands while offering a blessing to the couple.
The Wedding Feast
The Thai wedding feast begins shortly after the wedding has ended. Like Western weddings, the couple offers their guests food and drink to celebrate their union. Unlike Western wedding parties however, the guests leave very shortly after the meal has ended in order to allow the newly wedded couple time alone to enjoy their new life.
