Muslim Marriage

According to Muslim law, a Muslim marriage is, first and foremost, a contract between two parties. Muslims cannot specify the religious ceremony; it is left entirely to the discretion of the “Qazi”, the person who celebrates it. Due to the belief that marriage is primarily a contract, no religious rites are necessary in order for a Muslim marriage to be considered valid.

The Traditional Procedure
The first step toward a Muslim marriage involves the declaration and acceptance of a marriage proposal which must be done in the presence of two male witnesses. Following this, a typical Muslim marriage ceremony would consist of the Qazi, bride and groom, two witnesses and the attorneys of the bride and groom gathered together in any convenient location. Once the “mehr” or dowry is settled, the Qazi may then recite the Fatihah or the Durud. The groom repeats various lines, ending the reading with the words: Qabul. Qabul. Qabul.

The groom is then led to the “Cenara” (ladies section) of the room. At the threshold of the room, he offers gifts to the sister of the bride and is blessed by the older women. Dinner follows and it is served separately to the men and women. After they eat, the couple will sit together for the first time. A “dupatta” (cloth) is used to cover their heads as they recite prayers.

The Wedding Night
On their wedding night, the groom will remain in a separate room at his bride’s house. In the morning, the groom’s family will arrive and accompany the newlyweds to their new home. The father of the bride will then give his daughter to her new husband and ask him to protect her forever.
