Marriages of Convenience (Sham Marriages)

The Immigration and naturalization Service estimates that approximately eight per cent of requests for INS fiance visas and marriages involving aliens are marriages of convenience entered into by the parties solely for the purposes to confer an INS fiance visa as well as an immigration benefit upon the alien beneficiary. This type of marriage is also known as a "sham" marriage. Personally, I would bet that the actual number is probably higher than that. Naturally, we do not condone these types of marriages.

Federal law provides for severe criminal penalties for sham marriages which includes prison sentences and high fines for the U. S. citizen participant. The penalties for these crimes are stated on the forms that you fill out. Penalties include imprisonment, astronomical fines, and the denial of future immigration benefits. With the trend to get tough in immigration matters in recent years, the likelihood of prosecution is much greater than before. In addition, the alien participant will be banned from consideration for any future INS fiance visas or immigration benefits of any kind.
